General Overview

General Overview

Welcome to the website of the Széchenyi István University’s Doctoral School of Law and Political Sciences

Our Doctoral School has been operating since 2008 - although its history goes back to earlier times, (you can learn more about it here. Since the foundation of the doctoral school, the goals and principles have not changed essentially. Practical operation has always tried and still tries to keep up with the changing times in order to meet the requirements of the new challenges. Within the framework of the Doctoral School, the doctoral program still operates as a general Law and Political Sciences program.

Aim of the doctoral training of Law and Political Sciences in Győr

With the training, the Doctoral School aims to promote several goals. Above all, we want to contribute to the provision of scientific supply in the field of law and political sciences. Firstly, we would like to improve the conditions of teaching and researching at the Deák Ferenc Law and Political Sciences Faculty in Győr.

At the same time many of our former students, who obtained a doctoral degree, are now either teaching at other Hungarian universities and law faculties or become researchers for other institutes.

Of course, we can only improve the conditions of our education if all the teachers and instructors are committed to the development of the national and international Law and Political Sciences.

In addition to ensuring the supply of high-quality instructors, and thus establishing a long-term foundation for quality training, we also consider the importance of meeting the needs of practical work. High level of abstraction skills, a sense for the foundation of the application of scientific results, and the scientific knowledge that appears and is expressed in legal practice are also required throughout the practical work one’s pursuing.

We are pleased to acknowledge that in recent years’ practicing judges and prosecutors, court and prosecutor's drafters and candidate lawyers, notaries, as well as public administration professionals consider it important to pursue PhD studies.

Our further goal is to develop the ability for applied research in professionals who will use their high-level knowledge at a specific stage of their career in the appropriate field of public life or legal practice. We are convinced that scientific skills - in addition to qualified judges, prosecutors, lawyers and notaries - can also serve public administration leaders, managers and state strategy makers. We believe that the theoretical and practical aspects of the research fields complement each other The combination at their own level greatly improves the researcher's competences, thus ensuring the receptiveness of the theoretical and practical specialists to know, understand and solve the problems.

We are thrilled to welcome applicants from across the border to our Doctoral School. We are convinced that the knowledge and skills we provide can help them thrive in the world of Law and Political Sciences.

Last, but not least, we are also prepared to provide useful and usable lectures to applicants who have obtained appropriate pre-qualification in the various administrative and judicial master's courses.

Győr's geographical location, regional relations, traditions and culture provide exceptional opportunities for PhD studies and doctoral training.

Our place at the University

Our Doctoral School is an independent organizational unit of the University named after István Széchenyi, which closely cooperates with the Faculty of Law and Political Science named after Ferenc Deák. The University represents the conditions of its operation; the Faculty represents the starting environment of its scientific and educational activities. The midst of the traditions of Széchenyi and Deák, we strive to represent the intellectual heritage of their fellow scientist, József Eötvös.

Quality assurance

In order to be able to ensure the constantly demanding professional work at our doctoral school, we used a number of quality assurance tools in recent years and will continue to use them in the future.

For example, one supervisor can only have a certain number of PhD students to support their studies.

We also regularly organize a research forum to evaluate the professional progress of our students, where participants, both students and lecturers have a chance to discuss their publication activities.

Founders of the doctoral school believed, and today's regular members are also convinced, that the institution's educational and research activities, requirements and quality assurance system, as well as the national and international relations provided and serve as an adequate guarantee that the Széchenyi István University's Doctoral School of Law and Political Sciences should be a recognized scientific workshop for postgraduate courses in Hungarian higher education.

On behalf of my colleagues, I welcome you on our website in this spirit.

Dr. Péter Takács

Head of the Doctoral School
